Box Score NEW ORLEANS – For the second consecutive day, the New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team (6-5) persevered through a tough doubles point and dominated singles for a 7-0 win against Prairie View A&M (0-12).
Nicolas Kramer and
Odysseas Papaioannou were first off the court. After losing the first game, the senior and freshman combo rattled off six straight games to secure the first victory.
Johannes Klein and
Samuel Armand had a late surge at flight two in a 7-5 victory that locked the doubles point to the home side.
"You can't underestimate anyone," said Coach
Burzis Kanga. "We showed up to play today and it started with the doubles point. We executed well and won all three matches. In singles it started with Sam getting the first point and it was a domino effect after that. Everyone played well and got the job done and that's what it takes."
In singles, the Privateers were in firm command. It started with Armand who breezed to a first set victory by two service breaks. He followed up with a hold in the final game to take a 6-2, 6-4 win.
Papaioannou was also in control of his match at flight six. He won 6-2, 6-3 to cap off a two-win day. Kramer won the clinching point. After battling through the first set, Kramer started the second set by taking the first two games. He won 6-4, 6-1 to clinch the match.
Mats Westkamp and
Misha Fomenkov were also 2-0 on the day. The duo combined for a doubles win in a tiebreak. In singles, Westkamp broke serve to win the first set and followed by winning the first five games of the second set. Fomenkov also won his singles match in straight sets (6-3, 6-3).
Klein capped off the sweep in a roller coaster third set. After winning the first four points, Klein lost the next four points. He then came back with six straight points to take the third set and finish the sweep for New Orleans.
The team has 12 days until their next match. They will take on Xavier (La.) on Feb. 22 at 3 p.m.
