Baton Rouge- The University of New Orleans track and field teams will head to Baton Rouge, Friday, Feb. 15 for the LSU Twilight Meet at the Carl Maddox Field House.
It's the final tune up for the Privateers before the Southland Conference Indoor Championships in Birmingham Feb. 24-25.
One Privateer who has fond memories of the Maddox Field House is long jumper
Michael Strong. The junior from New Orleans set the school record (24' 2.50") at the LSU Twilight last year, smashing his own mark he set two weeks earlier at the LSU Bayou Bengal.
"I think Mike is just more comfortable jumping there than at Birmingham, said head track and field coach
Brian Johnson. "Sometimes you just like the environment. I hope he takes that same edge this weekend.
Danielle Lorenz grabbed her first victory of the indoor season in the women's shot put with a 47' 11.75" effort at the Samford Bulldog Open last week. From Dardanelle, Arkansas, she set the school record of 48' 6" at the Bayou Bengal Meet on Feb. 1.
Johnson says his sermon to his team this week is not different. It's all about effort.
"That to me is the most important part of competition. How much heart you're willing to give, how much you're willing to hurt. I can take a bad race if you are giving effort. The effort we give this week will catapult us into the Southland Conference Meet."
Among the invited teams to the LSU Twilight are fellow Southland Conference members McNeese and Northwestern State. Also on the list of invited squads are Hinds, Meridian, Mississippi College, Mobile, William Carey, Tulane, and Xavier University of Louisiana.
