NEW ORLEANS STARTS CRUCIAL 4-GAME ROAD TRIP IN HAMMOND AGAINST SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA

New Orleans- Fresh off perhaps the most rewarding win of the season, the University of New Orleans women's basketball team embarks on the first of a four-game road trip, Wednesday, Feb. 20, in Hammond, Louisiana against the Lady Lions of Southeastern Louisiana University (9-15, 4-9 Southland).  Tipoff is 7 p. m.

New Orleans (9-13, 5-8 Southland), fought back from a 19-point, third quarter deficit to defeat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi last Saturday, 56-54.  In the final 16 minutes and 41 seconds of the game, UNO outscored the Islanders 40-19, holding them to 26.7% shooting in the final period as junior center Whitley Larry hit the game-winning jumper with 8.2 seconds to play.

Larry hit the game-winner, but the comeback was sparked by 5-3 energizer guard Rehema Franklin, who came off the bench for a career and team-high 16 points in only 21 minutes of action.  The junior from New Orleans exceeded her previous career-high at UNO of 13 points in a loss to Nicholls Feb. 9.

Senior center Shania Woods is 9th in the conference in scoring (14.6), 2nd in rebounds (8.6) and 7th in field goal percentage (48%).  From Houston, Texas, Woods is 10th all-time among scorers in UNO basketball history with 1,160 points.  She needs only 8 rebounds to move into the number three spot among rebounders in program history, surpassing Dollene Magee (1981-85) who sits at 814 rebounds.

Whitley Larry has blocked 44 shots this season, second-best in the Southland Conference for an average of 1.9 a contest.   Her teammate, Kayla Thomas, the Sophomore from Philadelphia, Penn. is third with 30 total and 1.3 a game.

The Lady Lions are in the midst of a 3-game losing streak after losing a 17-point lead in the loss to McNeese.  SLU got a career-high 23 points from Jaclyn Scholvin and 21 from Charliee Dugas.

Junior guard Celica Sterling leads the club in scoring at 14.6 a game and Scholvin, a senior guard from Mandeville, Louisiana, is next averaging 10.3 a contest.  Sophomore forward Caitlyn Williams leads the Lady Lions in rebounding pulling down 7.7 a contest.

"Coach Guzzardo and her staff have worked hard to turn Southeastern's progam around.  I feel like they are more of a team now.  This year they have more involvement and anybody can step up and go off on any given night," said New Orleans head coach Keeshawn Davenport.

New Orleans has one home game remaining, March 6 against Southeastern Louisiana at Lakefront Arena.
