Lake Charles, Louisiana - A three-week break form competition comes to an end Monday for the University of New Orleans golf team when they travel to Lake Charles, Louisiana for the Lake Charles Invitational, Monday and Tuesday, March 18-19.
The three-week gap between tournaments was by design and should be beneficial to the team says head golf coach
Jeff Lorio.
"The goal is always for us to peak for our conference championship at the end of April. So we're doing something different with our schedule with two early events and then some time off, three tournaments in a row before a week and a half off before conference. So we'll see how it works."
The field in Lake Charles will be the best the Privateers have faced this year. Texas Tech is ranked 14
th nationally and Arkansas State is 24
th. Also in the field---McNeese, Nicholls, Lamar and Stephen F. Austin of the Southland Conference.  TCU, Rice and Louisiana-Lafayette are also in the field.
"It gets us prepared in that competitive environment. We'll gain some experience and learn some lessons so we're ready come April (Southland Conference Tournament). It's a chance to play against some of the best players in the country and our kids are excited about it."
Max Hellstrom had an outstanding tournament at the Colin Montgomerie Invitational the last time out. The junior from Stockholm, Sweden finished tied for 12
th place after rounds of 73 and par 72 at Augusta Pines Golf Course in Spring, Texas. He shot a two-round total of 1-over 145.
Next week the New Orleans golfers will head to Comanche Trace in Kerrville, Texas for the Big Texan Tournament, Monday and Tuesday, March 25-26.
