DAY ONE RESULTS
Lake Charles Louisiana - Max Hellstrom and
Jackson Smith led the way for the University of New Orleans golf team during the first two rounds of the Lake Charles Toyota Invitational at the Country Club at the Golden Nugget in Lake Charles Louisiana Monday.
Hellstrom covered the par-72 course with rounds of 71 and 72 for a two-round total of 1-under par 143. Smith, a senior from Tyler Texas, finished at even par 144 for 36 holes with rounds of 71 and 73.
The Privateers finished the day at 2-over par 578 as a team, in 14
th place in a very tough 18-team field.
"It was a total team effort," said golf coach
Jeff Lorio. "This was the first time all year that we had 5 guys playing pretty well at the same time. The effort was there all day."
Ryan Fulton, a freshman from Crowley, Louisiana finished at 1-over par 145 (73-72).Â
Grayson Gilbert, another freshman from Monroe, Louisiana, came in at 2-over 146 after rounds of 72 and 74. Ulisses de Toledo, Jr. shot at 5-over 149 on the day.
With nationally ranked teams like Texas Tech and Arkansas State in the field, Lorio felt the strength of the field was the catalyst for the team's performance.
"The mindset that the competition was a little better produced a mindset that we had to go out and produce. We went out early and made a lot of birdies and that was good to see."
The Privateers will tee it up Tuesday morning at 9 a. m. for the third and final round.
