Men's Tennis Returns Home to Face New Mexico State

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team (6-8) will host the first of two non-conference opponents in the coming week on Monday when the New Mexico State Aggies (6-8) come to town. The match is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start at the University Tennis Center.

The Privateers are looking to bounce back after a tough loss to open Southland play against Lamar. Monday's match will be just the fifth at home for New Orleans this season. Six of the last eight matches on the regular season schedule are on the Privateers' home court.

Odysseas Papaioannou earned his sixth victory of the season which leads the team. Four other Privateers have five wins this year. Papaioannou and Nicolas Kramer have also been on a hot streak in doubles. The tandem has posted wins in four of the last five matches at flight three. Overall, the Privateers are 19-13 in doubles play this spring.

The two sides used to be Sun Belt Conference foes. In that stretch, New Orleans went 2-3 against the Aggies. They played each other twice in the conference tournament with each team winning a match. The last meeting between the two sides was in 2004.

New Mexico State comes in having lost back-to-back matches. Their last loss was against in-state foe, New Mexico by a 4-0 score on Sunday, Mar. 17. The Aggies also will come in after having played a pair of matches on the weekend against Chicago State and Southern Miss. The Aggies are 0-6 in true road matches this year.

Mauri Benitez has the most singles wins this spring with five. Benitez has alternated between flight four and five. Martin Simecek has a 4-4 mark this season, all at flight three. Stijn de Haan was 8-3 in the fall and has 10 total wins this year.
