LAKE CHARLES, La. - The University of New Orleans track and field teams get its first crack at outdoor competition, Saturday, Mar. 9, at the Cowboy Relays hosted by McNeese State University.
Head track and field coach
Brian Johnson is looking forward to seeing his team compete in the elements.
"I like the outdoors, the weather is a factor. The warm weather is key for us so I'm ecstatic that we are moving outdoors into hot weather."
The Privateers will be joined by fellow Southland Conference members, Northwestern State, Southeastern Louisiana and host school McNeese. Additional schools represented are ULM, Louisiana, Dillard, Louisiana College, and Wiley.
New Orleans will have a full contingent of sprinters, however some of the distance runners who ran in the conference indoor meet will get another week of rest.
"It's more-or-less a training meet for us and for just about everyone else," said Johnson. "A tune up to get used to being outdoors and go from there. We know that the better performances are down the line but it's good to be outside."
One Cowboys Relay meet record is held by a former UNO Privateer. Hurdler
Alexia Fortenberry holds the mark in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 13.40 set in 2015.
NEXT UP
The next time the Privateers hit the track will be Saturday and Sunday, March 15-16, at the Louisiana Classics hosted by the the Ragin' Cajuns.
