NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team will host a pair of midweek matches. On Wednesday, the Privateers will take on Nicholls with a scheduled 11 a.m. start. The Privateers will then play non-conference foe, William Carey on Thursday at 2 p.m. Both matches will take place at the University Tennis Center.
Last week, the Privateers suffered a pair of losses including a narrow 4-3 defeat at the hands of defending Southland regular season champion, UIW. The Privateers won the doubles point and got victories from
Misha Fomenkov and
Johannes Klein. However, they could not overcome being shorthanded with only five players available.
Klein and
Samuel Armand became the first team to reach double figures in wins as a tandem. They are also 2-0 against conference foes (10-6 overall). In singles, three Privateers have seven wins: Klein,
Mats Westkamp, and
Odysseas Papaioannou.
New Orleans has gotten the better of Nicholls four of six times since joining the Southland. One of those four wins came in the conference tournament in 2013. The Colonels won last year's meeting between the two sides 4-3.
Nicholls (4-13, 0-2) has lost six straight matches since their last win which came against Alcorn State on Mar. 23. Most recently, the Colonels endured a tough stretch of two matches against SEC opponents, losing to LSU and Kentucky. The Colonels came to New Orleans in the fall for the Scramble on the Bayou. The Privateers won the match 6-1.
William Carey (9-3) is ranked sixth in the latest NAIA poll. The Crusaders suffered a 5-4 loss to #7 Xavier in their last outing. Two Crusaders are ranked in the top 15 in the latest ITA singles rankings: Elvyn Nguyen (#7) and Akanit Pumjit (#13). The Crusaders won their only previous match this season against a Division I opponent when they beat Alcorn State.
