BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The New Orleans track & field program saw
Arina Kleshchukova win the women's 5000-meter title and the men's program put up the most points in program history since the Privateers joined the conference on the opening day of the 2020 Southland Conference Indoor Championships at the Birmingham Crossplex on Sunday.

Arina Kleshchukova became just the second athlete to win a Southland Conference title in program history as the distance standout won the women's 5000-meter final with a school-record performance of 16:56.92.

Aaron Worrell continued his stellar indoor campaign as he placed third in the men's long jump with a top leap of 7.26m (23-10.00) and then followed it up with a fourth-place finish in the high jump with a best clearance of 2.08m (6-09.75), just .01m off his personal best. He was responsible for 11 of the Privateers 17 points scored on the men's side.

Vojislav Gvero also reached the podium as the sophomore thrower took third overall in the men's weight throw with a 17.92m (58-09.50) performance. The showing was just six inches off the school record, a mark Gvero set last indoor season.

Jantrell Drakes just missed out on the finals by a single-spot as she finished ninth overall in the women's 800-meter prelims with a new personal best of 2:20.28.

Matthew Clarke had a solid day overall as he took 10th in the 200 with a time of 21.61 and 15th in the 60 at 6.96. Both times were just seconds off from becoming new personal bests.

Alec Snell also just missed out on a trip to the finals as he posted a 1:54.55 performance in the men's 800-meter prelims.

Shayna Yon also almost punched a ticket to the next round with her 12th-place finish in the 60-meter prelims at 7.72.

Shamarah Shannon finished 11th overall in the women's 200-meter prelims and 21st in the 400-meter prelims with a new personal best mark of 58.09.
- The 17 points scored by the men's program is the most that New Orleans has recorded in program history since joining the Southland Conference. In the opening day of the championship meet, the Privateers have already passed their old Southland high of 14 set back in 2015.
- The women's group recorded 12 of their own points as they to look to set a new program best with their performance tomorrow. The record the Privateers are shooting for is 21.5, also set during the 2015 indoor championships.
- In total, New Orleans set 10 new personal bests on Sunday.

The Privateers will close out the Southland Indoor Championships on Monday at the Birmingham Crossplex. Field events will get the day started at 10 AM CT and will be followed by the track portion of the program beginning at 11 AM.
