This Week in New Orleans Athletics - Week 27

NEW ORLEANS – New Orleans golf hosts the Gulf Coast Intercollegiate at Diamondhead Country Club in Mississippi March 2-3 and beach volleyball welcomes eight programs for the annual New Orleans Invitational at Digs Volleyball Complex in Covington March 6-7 to highlight a busy week full of home events.
 
Men's and women's celebrate Senior Night Saturday versus Southeastern and baseball hosts four games, including the Southland Conference series opener against Nicholls March 6-8 at Maestri Field. Track and field conclude the indoor season with Day Two of 2020 Southland Championships in Birmingham Monday.
 
PROMOTIONS
TUESDAY
Baseball hosts Alcorn on Weekday Double Play Night - $6 drinks, $4 jambalaya and $3 drinks – Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Maestri Field.
 
Wednesday is Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night at Lakefront Arena as women's basketball welcomes Northwestern State at 7 p.m.
 
Friday is Friday Night Happy Hour presented by Coors Light when the Privateers take on the Colonels in baseball's league opener at 6:30 p.m. The contest will air live on NASH ICON 106.1 FM.
 
Saturday is Senior Night for men's and women's basketball and the LPs as head coach Keeshawn Davenport says will celebrate six student-athletes participating in their final contest before the 2020 Southland Tournament. The men honor Jaylen Key and one of the programs most decorated scorers in Bryson Robinson prior to the men's tip at 6 p.m. It is Son of a Saint Night on the Lakefront and students and faculty/staff can participate in shooting contests to win money – layup, free throw, three-pointer and halfcourt shots.
 
Sunday is Family Day at Maestri Field and four silver grandstand tickets are just $30.

MEN'S BASKETBALL
New Orleans (8-20, 4-14 Southland) heads to Natchitoches Wednesday before concluding the season at home against the Lions. Robinson has reached double figures in all 28 games this season and is just one three-pointer away from tying James Parlow for most threes in a single season (85).
 
The Privateers fell to the Demons in the first meeting and defeated the Lions in Hammond in early February.
 
BEACH VOLLEYBALL
The Privateers are off to their best start as a program at 5-1 overall. Veronica Corcoran and Lucie Pokorna are 5-1 at the top flight and Victoria Corcoran and Ally Carr match the record at No. 2. New Orleans hosts four matches as part of the New Orleans Invitational in Covington this weekend.
 
The Privateers take on South Texas' A&M-Kingsville and A&M-Corpus Christi Friday, and Nicholls and #RV Tulane Saturday at Digs Volleyball Complex.
 
BASEBALL
The Privateers begin a four-game week at home against Alcorn State for the first of two meetings on Tuesday. Following that, Southland play opens on Friday with a three-game series against the Nicholls Colonels.
 
NOTES
- Luther Woullard hit .400 in 20 at-bats last week. He had four extra base hits (two doubles, one triple, and one home run).
- Privateer pitchers recorded 44 strikeouts to 18 walks in five games last week in 44 innings pitched.
- New Orleans went 1-2 in the opening conference series against Nicholls in 2019.
- Pearce Howard added six more RBI to his total, which now stands at 15 entering the week.
 
WOMEN'S TENNIS
It's the first conference road swing for the Privateers (6-1) who will face Central Arkansas (Friday) and Northwestern State (Sunday). The matches are 1 p.m. and 11 a.m. respectively.
 
NOTES
- Ank Vullings is coming off a huge singles win where she defeated defending Southland Player of the Year, Sahaja Yamalapalli.
- After this road swing over the weekend, the Privateers will be home for their next 11 matches.
- Mar Gendra continues to remain undefeated in singles play after winning her match at flight four against Sam Houston State. Gendra is at 7-0.
 
TRACK AND FIELD
Day two of the Southland Indoor Championships begin at 10 a.m. CST in Birmingham. Arina Kleshchukova won the women's 5000-meter title and the men's program put up the most points in program history since the Privateers joined the conference on the opening day of the 2020 Southland Conference Indoor Championships at the Birmingham Crossplex on Sunday. The men posted 17 points and the women recorded 12
 
NOTEABLES
- Kleshchukova became just the second athlete to win a Southland Conference title in program history as the distance standout won the women's 5000-meter final with a school-record performance of 16:56.92.
- Aaron Worrell continued his stellar indoor campaign as he placed third in the men's long jump with a top leap of 7.26m (23-10.00) and then followed it up with a fourth-place finish in the high jump with a best clearance of 2.08m (6-09.75), just .01m off his personal best. He was responsible for 11 of the Privateers 17 points scored on the men's side.
- Vojislav Gvero also reached the podium as the sophomore thrower took third overall in the men's weight throw with a 17.92m (58-09.50) performance. The showing was just six inches off the school record, a mark Gvero set last indoor season.
- Jantrell Drakes just missed out on the finals by a single-spot as she finished ninth overall in the women's 800-meter prelims with a new personal best of 2:20.28.
- Matthew Clarke had a solid day overall as he took 10th in the 200 with a time of 21.61 and 15th in the 60 at 6.96. Both times were just seconds off from becoming new personal bests.
- Alec Snell also just missed out on a trip to the finals as he posted a 1:54.55 performance in the men's 800-meter prelims.
- Shayna Yon also almost punched a ticket to the next round with her 12th-place finish in the 60-meter prelims at 7.72.
- Shamarah Shannon finished 11th overall in the women's 200-meter prelims and 21st in the 400-meter prelims with a new personal best mark of 58.09.
- The 17 points scored by the men's program is the most that New Orleans has recorded in program history since joining the Southland Conference. In the opening day of the championship meet, the Privateers have already passed their old Southland high of 14 set back in 2015.
- The women's group recorded 12 of their own points as they to look to set a new program best with their performance tomorrow. The record the Privateers are shooting for is 21.5, also set during the 2015 indoor championships.
- In total, New Orleans set 10 new personal bests on Sunday.
 
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The Privateers conclude the season with back-to-back home games. Currently 15-12 overall and 11-7 in league play, New Orleans hosts Northwestern State at 7 p.m. and Southeastern at 4 p.m. UNO defeated the Lady Demons 77-63 earlier this year and look to avenge a loss to the Lions in early February.
 
GOLF
The Privateers host the Gulf Coast Intercollegiate at Diamondhead Country Club Monday & Tuesday. It's a shotgun start from Mississippi both days with rounds one and two Monday. Live scoring is available on GolfStat.com.
 
- Last week's third-round score of 279 was the best round of the Jeff Lorio era, the best round since 2006, and a top-five single round in program history.
- Florian Moosmeier's third-round score of 66 was his second time with that score this season, and the third time a Privateer has shot a 66 this year.
- Over three rounds last week, four different student-athletes shot career bests: Lukas Heckmann (215), Brady Bennett (221), Nolan Lambert (224) and Thomas Artigas (224).
