300 GAMES FOR SLESSINGER
Head basketball coach
Mark Slessinger will hit the sidelines for his 300th career game as a Privateer against Rice on Friday. Over his 11-plus seasons on the Lakefront, Coach Sless has compiled a 132-167 (.442) record with New Orleans. Slessinger has the most games coached in program history (299 entering Friday) and has recorded the second-most wins. He has coached the Privateers to three national postseason appearances, which includes a showing in the NCAA Tournament in 2017.
ALL EYES ON THE SAINT
Graduate point guard
Derek St. Hilaire has started off the year on an absolute tear. In the first three games of the 2021-22 campaign, the Atlanta, Ga. native has averaged 21.7 points which leads all Southland Conference student-athletes and is tied for 28th in the nation. St. Hilaire just went off for 27 points against Northwestern and only committed one turnover in 37 minutes of play against the Big Ten foe. The graduate PG has gone for double-digit points in six straight contests, dating back to last season. The performance against Northwestern was also the fourth 20-plus point game of his New Orleans career. To go with the impressive point totals, St. Hilaire is third in the Southland in free throw percentage (.889), sixth in field goal percentage (.472) and tied for ninth in three-pointers made per game (3.2).
GREEN WATCH IS ON
Troy Green returned for his fifth season of college ball this year and the senior from St. Rose, La. will end his career with his name etched all over the UNO record book. On Friday, fans and supporters could witness history as Green will have the chance to continue his climb up the UNO scoring list. Green will take over ninth all-time with seven points, eighth all-time with 17 points, and will leapfrog into sixth in school history with 19 points. The senior guard will also move into a tie for third all-time in career games played with the Privateers. It will be his 123rd game in total.
LOOKING TO KNOCK OFF THE OWLS FOR FIRST TIME
The non-conference contest between Rice and New Orleans is the first game in school history played between the programs in the Big Easy. The Owls enter the game with a 3-0 advantage all-time, which includes a 73-62 win over the Privateers back on Dec. 21, 2020. Head coach Slessinger is also looking for his first career win over the Owls (0-3 all-time).
