Women’s Basketball Drops Exhibition Contest to West Alabama

Box Score NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans women's basketball team dropped an exhibition contest to visiting West Alabama 79-59 at the UNO Lakefront Arena on Saturday afternoon. It was the first and final tune up for the squad in a game-like atmosphere before the regular-season beings on Tuesday, Nov. 9 with a trip to Texas.

GAME NOTES
- Tiana Gipson led the way for the Privateers with 11 points on 3-of-6 shooting. She also chipped in an assist and a rebound. It was her first contest of any kind in an UNO uniform as she missed the previous season as a redshirt.
- Jomyra Mathis showed the impact she will bring to the point guard position as she posted 10 points to go with a game-high six assists, a steal and a board.
- DeArica Pryor was the third Privateer in double-digits as she put up 10 points along with three assists and two steals.
- Zanaa Cordis led the Privateers with five boards as she added four points (a perfect 2-of-2 from the field) and an assist.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two sides started the game with an even first quarter as the Privateers were able to take a slight 17-16 edge. Both teams knocked down just about half of their attempts in the opening frame (50 percent for West Alabama and 43.8 percent for UNO). The Jaguars were able to keep it close with their work at the charity stripe, as they converted on 7-of-9 attempts while the Privateers didn't record a single free throw attempt.
- Defense was the name of the game in the second as the two teams combined to go just 7-of-23 (.304) from the field. UNO was able to extend its lead however out to 32-26.
- The Jaguars took it to the Privateers in the third as they hit 57.1 percent of their shots from the field to win the frame by a 28-16 margin. South Alabama was able to jump ahead 54-48 as they head into the fourth.
- The good momentum for the Jaguars carried over into the fourth as West Alabama won the final frame by a 25-11 score to take the 79-59 victory.
 
NEXT UP
The Privateers will get their 2021-22 campaign officially underway as the squad heads to the University of Texas for a non-conference showdown with the Longhorns on Tuesday, Nov. 9. Tip is set for 5:30 PM CT and the game will be streamed nationally on the Longhorn Network.
