Cross Country Has Record-Setting Day at Southland Championships

The #NewEraIsNow as the New Orleans cross country program rewrote the record book at the 2020 Southland Championships.

HAMMOND, La. – The New Orleans cross country program had a record-setting day for best team finish since joining the conference as both the men's and women's squads finished fourth overall at the 2020 Southland Conference Cross Country Championships that ran through Southeastern's campus on Sunday.

NOTABLES
- Both the men's and women's teams set new program records for best finish and lowest point total scored since the Privateers have joined the Southland. The men finished fourth with 113 points, a six-spot and 93-point improvement from its previous program mark. The women also came in fourth with 112 points to beat out its old Southland school record by seven spots and 162 points.
- It was the best championship meet finish for the men's group since the Privateers placed fourth at the 2005 Sun Belt Championships and the best for the women's side since a fourth-place finish at the 2002 Sun Belt Championships. 
- New Orleans standout Arina Kleshchukova finished as the Runner-Up for the women's 6K championship race. Her time of 20:46.93 set the new school record for a female student-athlete at the 6K distance. It was also the fastest time ever ran by a Privateer in a championship meet and a new personal best by three seconds. She earned First Team All-Southland for the third consecutive year.
- Newcomer Anna Dohmen stepped up on the championship stage in a big way as she placed 11th with a new personal record of 21:44.3 She was named Southland Newcomer of the Year and earned Third Team All-Conference with the performance.
- Ariana Jimenez (22:35.50), Amelia Bretz (22:50.76) and Anna Martin (22:57.60) rounded out the scoring attack for the New Orleans women as they took 28th, 33rd and 38th, respectively. All three student-athletes set new personal bests at 6K with the strong showing.
- Anna Martin (38th/22:57.60) and Holly Hedrick (61st/24:38.70) also set new PRs.
- On the men's side, Kolyn Saltzman continued to add to his already impressive two-year resume with the Privateers as he claimed fourth overall with a new personal best of 23:44.86. The mark was the fastest time recorded by a New Orleans student-athlete at 8K in school history. Saltzman earned First Team All-Southland with the showing, the second All-Conference honor for the just sophomore in cross country (won Second Team in 2019). His fourth-place finish was the best place ever received by a male student-athlete in a championship race at UNO.
- Jaden Forester put up the second-best showing by a freshman in the championship meet as he finished seventh at 23:49.9 to take home Second Team All-Southland honors. His time was a new personal record and slotted into the top-10 in program history at 8K. It was also the fastest time ever ran by a UNO freshman in school history at the distance.
- Cade Litolff (25:15.06), Julian Silva (25:15.76) and David Hidalgo (25:25.91) crossed the line in a tight pack to close out the record-breaking performance as they came in 32nd, 34th and 36th, respectively. All three times were new PRs.
- Kristian Oatman (42nd/25:40.46) and Cameron Carpenter (57th/26:28.39) also posted new personal bests.
- All 14 Privateers that raced today set a new personal record at their respective distance.

NEXT UP
Today closed the book on the cross country season but it won't take long for the distance group to get back in action as the Southland Indoor Championships are set for Sunday, Feb. 28 through Monday, March 1 at the Birmingham Crossplex in Birmingham, Ala.
