COMPLETE DAY ONE RESULTS
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The New Orleans track & field program continued its record-setting season on the opening day of the 2021 Southland Conference Indoor Championships as both men's and women's teams posted the highest team point total since joining the conference as the Privateers took to the track at the Birmingham Crossplex on Sunday.

CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS
- For the third consecutive meet, newcomer
Shanell Atkins continued her assault on the New Orleans record book as she set a new school record with a personal best toss of 19.21 meters which claimed the women's title in the weight throw.

Arina Kleshchukova set a new school record as she continued to cement herself as one of the best in school history with a gold-medal performance in the women's 5000-meter race with a personal record of 16:48.21. It is the third Southland Championship of her career (two during indoors, one during cross country) and the second consecutive year that she has captured the 5K indoor crown.
- The men's weight throw duo of
Vojislav Gvero and
Matthew Christy racked up 10 big points in the event. Gvero placed third overall to take the bronze with a best heave of 17.87 meters. Christy had the best performances of his career as he took fifth with new PR of 16.16 meters.
- The men's and women's distance medley relay groups had one of the best collective meets in recent history as both squads claimed the silver medal at second overall. The men's team recorded a time of 10:14.46 while the women ran a 11:57.51, respectively.

Kolyn Saltzman set a new school record at the 5K distance as he finished sixth with a personal best of 14:26.67 in the championship race.
ALREADY THE BEST TEAM FINISHES SINCE JOINING THE CONFERENCE
The women's team posted 28 points while the men's group collected 21 on the opening day of the 2021 Southland Indoor Championships. Both marks are a school record for most points scored at an indoor conference championship since joining the Southland.
ADVANCING TO THE FINALS

Shamarah Shannon had a big opening day as she advanced to the finals of both the 60 and 200-meter dashes. She clocked a 7.71 to finish fourth in the 60 preliminary round and a 24.80 to come in third in the 200 prelims. She also ran a leg of the women's DMR group.

Alec Snell also has a championship on his mind as the second-ranked Southland runner coming into the meet in the 800 posted the top time in the prelims of the event at 1:52.90. It was a new personal record and the third-best time recorded in school history.

Ismael Kone will race in the finals of the 60 on Monday as he took second overall in the prelims with a mark of 6.81. He also just missed out in a spot in the 200 finals with a ninth-place finish in the prelims of the event.
- The men's and women's side made it a double in the finals of the mile as
Anna Dohmen took the top spot in the prelims with a time of 5:07.61 on the women's side and
Jaden Forester placed third for the men at 4:17.49, respectively.
