NEW ORLEANS – The NCAA Division I National Championships might have just ended however there is no rest in store for the New Orleans track & field program as the Privateers announced the signing of Tylin Jackson from Southeastern Conference (SEC) power Arkansas on Tuesday. The news was made official by UNO director of track & field
Brian Johnson.
Jackson, a Lancaster, Texas native, just finished his freshman campaign for the Razorbacks and will be another strong addition to a nationally-ranked men's sprints group.
"I am excited to welcome Tylin to our program," Johnson said. "He will add depth to our sprints squad and will also give us a great addition to our men's 4x100 relay group."
Jackson competed for two indoor seasons with Arkansas (he will get one back after the COVID-19 pandemic) and has yet to make his outdoor debut at the collegiate level. His highlights with the Razorbacks featured a 14th-place finish in the 200 at the 2020 SEC Indoor Championships, his personal best of 21.09 with a runner-up finish in the 200 at the Arkansas Qualifier (Feb. 21, 2020), a tenth-place in the 200 and his career-best of 7.00 in the 60 at the Tyson Invitational (Feb. 14-15, 2020), and a fifth-place performance in his debut race in the 200 at the Red Raider Invitational (Jan. 24, 2020).
He was also named the SEC Freshman of the Week after his strong showing at the Arkansas Qualifier.
Jackson was a standout at Lancaster High School, where he was a Texas 5A bronze medalist in the 200. He also scored on Lancaster's 4x100 bronze medalist and 4x200 state runner-up relay teams as he helped the program to a 5A State Runner-Up finish in 2019. Jackson placed fourth in the 200 at the UIL State Championships as a junior and was ranked in the Top-25 in the United States in the 200 outdoors.
He will enter with collegiate-best times of 7.00 in the 60 and 21.09 in the 200 indoors. The 200 time would have tied for first at the 2021 Southland Indoor Championships. Jackson also has outdoor personal bests of 10.50 in the 100 and 20.75 that he posted in high school. The 200 mark would have ranked fifth in the Southland during the 2021 outdoor campaign.
The New Orleans men's sprints group is on the verge of building something special as the 100 squad was ranked 27th in the nation in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's (USTFCCCA) #EventSquad Ranking and freshman
Ismael Kone just finished 21st in the country at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The Privateers also had two compete in the 100 at the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round (Kone and
Elliott Cummings) and will look to add to that number in 2022.
