2021-2022 NEW ORLEANS GOLF SCHEDULE

NEW ORLEANS –
After back-to-back abbreviated seasons due to COVID-19, the University of New Orleans Golf team is scheduled to play a full ten tournament slate this season.

The season kicks off on Sept. 12 with the Golfweek Fall Challenge at the True Blue Golf Club at Pauleys Island, SC. True Blue was designed by Mike Strantz and opened to rave reviews in 1998. Modeled after Pine Valley and Pinehurst #2, the par-72 course can stretch to 7,126 yards with emphasis on natural beauty, and surprise elevation changes. Unlike most collegiate golf tournaments, the Golfweek Fall Challenge takes place over three days with a single round played per day. The Privateers have never played in the Golfweek Fall Challenge (formerly known as the Golfweek Program Challenge).

Two weeks later UNO travels to Madison, Ill for the Derek Dolenc invitational hosted by SIUE on Sept. 27-28. The tournament will be played at the Gateway National Golf Links in Madison, Ill. The Keith Foster designed par-71 course expands to 7,178 yards from the championship tees. Features include tall native grass around the fairways, lakes, wood-tie bunkers, and a view of the St. Louis arch. In their only previous appearance in the tournament, the team finished in ninth place after shooting an 893 in 2016.

UNO kicks off the month of October at UT-Martin's Grover Page Classic on Oct. 4-5 at the Jackson Country Club in Jackson, Tenn. The event is familiar territory for the program, having played in three Grover Page Classics since 2015. The Privateers have improved their position at the Classic each time out (7th in 2016, tied for 5th in 2017, and 5th in 2018). Brady Bennett is the only current Privateer to previously play in the Grover Page Classic shooting a 229 in 2018.

The Privateers will travel to RidgePointe Country Club in Jonesboro, Ark. for the Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate hosted by Arkansas State on Oct. 11-12. UNO has played RidgePointe 11 times since 1996 and won the 2006 ASU Indian Classic in a two-hole playoff. New Orleans last played there in 2017 finishing 17th after shooting a 941. RidgePointe Country Club plays 6,565 yards to a par-72.

A trip to the Pinetree Intercollegiate on Oct. 18-19 closes the fall portion of the schedule. The tournament, hosted by Kennesaw State, takes place at the Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw, Ga. Pinetree opened in 1962 and was renovated as recently as 2008. The course stretches 7,108 yards and plays to a par-72 featuring rolling hills, tall Georgia pines, babbling brooks, and sparkling ponds. The Privateers have never played in the Pinetree Intercollegiate, or at the Pinetree Country Club.

Four familiar tournaments await New Orleans in the spring portion of the schedule.

For the third year in a row, UNO will co-host the Gulf Coast Collegiate with Nicholls at the Diamondhead Country Club in Diamondhead, Miss. on Feb. 28-Mar. 1. New Orleans has fared well in Diamondhead in recent years, finishing in fourth place last season and winning the tournament the year before – the first team championship in a decade. Florian Moosmeier shot a 65 during the opening round of his career at the Gulf Cost Collegiate two years ago – tied for the second lowest round in school history. The Pine course at Diamondhead plays 6,769 yards to a par-72.

Three more tournaments in March wrap up the regular season for the Privateers. On Mar. 7-8 New Orleans heads to Spring, Texas, and the Augusta Pines Golf Club for the annual Colin Montgomerie Invitational hosted by HBU. Two years ago, the Privateers came within a stroke of winning the tournament, and last year Grayson Gilbert won the individual championship after shooting a 213 - the first individual championship by a Privateer since 2010 - after a two-hole playoff with HBU's Marcelo Trevino. Augusta Pines Golf Club plays 7,015 yards to a par-72.

For the third time in four seasons, New Orleans heads to Comanche Trace in Kerrville, Texas for The Big Texan on March 20-21. Last season Moosmeier, who finished with a score of 211, was tied for first-place after his 54 holes at Comanche Trace before finishing tied for second place. The program's best team finish at The Big Texan was a sixth place finish achieved last season with an 884 - the team's best score was an 870 shot in 2020. Comanche Trace plays 7,059 yards to a par-72.

The penultimate tournament of the season comes in Mathews, La. at the LaTOUR Intercollegiate hosted by Nicholls on March 28-29. The Privateers have played in all three previous LaTOUR Intercollegiates over the last three seasons, as well as an additional Collegiate Challenge at LaTOUR Golf Club in 2019. Last season Brady Bennett finished tied for second place after shooting a 139 over two rounds at LaTOUR, earning himself Southland Golfer of the Month honors for February. Two seasons ago the Privateers shot a third-round 279, sinking 18 birdies, their best round since 2006. LaTOUR Golf Club plays 7,170 yards to a par-72.

New Orleans concludes the year back at the Stonebridge Ranch Country Club for the Southland Championships on Apr. 25-27 in McKinney, Texas. UNO will be making its eighth appearance in the Southland Championship with its best result being a 7th place finish in 2016. In addition to the league's remaining members, Augusta University and Francis Marion University will send their men's programs to Stonebridge as affiliate members for the first time. The Dye course at Stonebridge plays 7,219 yards to a par-72.

The Privateers return eight of nine golfers who saw action last spring including two-time second team All-Southland selection Moosmeier. Moosmeier (fifth), Gilbert (14th), and Bennett (25th) were all ranked in the top 30 of the Southland last season by Golfstat. Newcomers include true freshman Kyle Bennett out of Zachary High school and graduate transfer Henry Augenstein from Wofford.
