NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team will start their spring season on Tuesday when they make the trip to a former Southland foe in the Lamar Cardinals. The match is scheduled for 11 a.m. in Beaumont.
The Privateers return five men from last season's squad. That includes Southland and LSWA Newcomer of the Year,
Marcel Volz who enters his final season on the Lakefront. Volz went 10-1 in singles during the '21 campaign.
Max Heinzel also returns after a solid campaign last season that saw him earn First Team all-conference honors with a 9-3 singles record. Heinzel was undefeated in the regular season against Southland Conference opponents.
Luke Joujan,
Espen Lagarde and
Mihajlo Drobnjakovic also return to the team. Joujan was an all-conference doubles selection. Drobnjakovic won a singles match in the opening round of the Southland Tournament against Lamar. Lagarde won six doubles matches at flight one last season.
Four newcomers complete the 2022 squad:
Matthew Armbruster,
Akos Kotorman,
Dhruv Tangri and
David Tesic.
This will be a rematch of the Southland Conference Tournament where the Privateers battled valiantly and nearly rallied but were defeated 4-3 by the Cardinals in the semifinals.
The start of the season will be marked by three road matches before New Orleans returns to the University Tennis Center for four consecutive matches starting Jan. 30.
