NEW ORLEANS –The University of New Orleans Cross Country teams will make the hour trek to Nicholls' Farm in Thibodaux, La. for the 2022 edition of the Southland Championships on Friday morning.
Both programs are looking to build on recent success at the event. Since Head Coach
Brock Moreaux arrived as an assistant in 201, both the men and women's squads have improved their placement and points total in the Southland Championships each season.
Last season the women finished in second place with 57 points – their second lowest point total at a conference championship, trailing only the 2000 Sun Belt Championship squad. The second-place finish for the women's team was their best finish at the Southland Championships.
Individually for the Privateer women,
Alexandra Weir finished in second-place last year with a time of 21.37.56, while
Ariana Jimenez finished in eighth with a time of 22:02.21.
The UNO men finished the Southland Championships in fourth place last season with a total of 93 points. Their fourth-place finish matched their finish at the event two seasons ago, and their points total was their lowest at conference championship in program history.
Kolyn Saltzman's times of 23:43.86 at last season's Southland Championships, and 23:24.10 in 2019 are the best and third-best 8K times in school history.
Jaden Forester has the second-best 8K time in school history with a 23.49.86 – also set at last season's Southland Championships.
The Privateer women will run a 6K starting at 8:30 a.m., with the men's 8K set to follow around 9:30 a.m. For the first time both races will be broadcast on ESPN+ and can be viewed
