NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team will play their home opener on Monday evening when they face the South Alabama Jaguars. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Lakefront Arena.
The Privateers are coming off a road loss seven days earlier against UTEP that opened their season. New Orleans shot 47.7 percent from the field in the effort and the Privateers had a four-point lead midway through the second quarter before a 16-2 UTEP run closed the half.
Justice Ross, who was limited to four games last year due to injury, had a solid season debut. The Minnesota transfer led the team in points (12) and rebounds (8) while playing 28 minutes.
The Privateers are playing South Alabama for the third season in a row. New Orleans defeated the Jaguars at the Lakefront Arena in 2020. The Jaguars returned the favor with a 63-53 win against New Orleans in Mobile last season.
Tomyree Thompson led the Privateers in points with 11.
Making her Privateer debut, starting point guard
Hennessey Luu-Brown played 29 minutes on opening night. Luu-Brown finished with eight points and four assists. Also making their debuts,
Nora Francois and
Tara Green contributed a combined 15 points and eight rebounds in 38 minutes.
New Orleans leads the all-time series 30-21. This is the fifth time overall the two teams are meeting in Coach
Keeshawn Davenport's tenure.
South Alabama is 1-1 on the season with a blowout win against Spring Hill and a 71-62 loss at the hands of Auburn. Kelsey Thompson racked up 21 points off the bench. The freshman is the team's leading scorer at 14.5 points per game and has also pulled down 6.0 rebounds per game through the first two contests.
In his 23
rd season as head coach, Terry Fowler is 330-329. Fowler has won 123 of those games at South Alabama.
