NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers (1-5) women's basketball team returns home for their Education Day game against the Mississippi Valley State Devilettes (1-6) on Wednesday. Tip is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Lakefront Arena.
New Orleans Athletics will welcome over 800 local grade school students to attend. There will be several interactive contests, games, presentations and educational activities through the day. Each student will receive a free digital workbook.
The last time the Privateers hosted Education Day was in 2019 when they defeated Pensacola Christian 91-31. New Orleans set a women's basketball Lakefront Arena attendance record during that game when an attendance of 921 was announced.
DeArica Pryor is second in the league in scoring (16.2 PPG) and first in the league in steals (2.8 SPG) entering Wednesday. Pryor had her second 20-point game of the season when she poured in 20 points against Wichita State. Pryor's steal total is a big part of the Privateers ranking second in the Southland in steals per game at 10.0.
New Orleans has played Mississippi Valley State once back in December 1993. The Privateers scored a narrow 74-72 victory in the lone meeting which took place at the Arkansas Dial Classic in Fayetteville.
Nine different Privateers have started a game this season and there has not been a lineup combination that has started more than one game through the first six this season.
The Devilettes notched their lone win against a Southland school when they defeated Nicholls 64-49. Mississippi Valley State is 1-2 against the Southland this year. They lost to Lamar and lost their second contest against Nicholls at the Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic in Hattiesburg, Miss.
Kimberly Anderson is in her first season as the head coach of the Devilettes. Anderson coached seven seasons at Lane College prior to coming to Itta Bena, Miss. In 2018-19, Anderson guided Lane College to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in school history.
Zakiya Mahoney leads the team in points and steals and is tied for the team lead in assists. Zaria Harleaux is leading the team in rebounding at 7.1 boards per game while averaging 8.4 points per game (second on the squad).
