NEW ORLEANS – 29 years to the day of their only previous meeting, the New Orleans Privateers (1-4) and Wichita State Shockers (6-1) will face each other on Saturday afternoon at the Charles Koch Arena. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.
The Privateers and Shockers have only played once before at a neutral site. The Shockers won a closely contested battle 79-75 at the Washington State Dial Classic on Dec. 3, 1993. New Orleans went on to win the third place game against St. John's the next day.
New Orleans continues their road heavy non-conference slate on Saturday. The Privateers have only played one of their first five games at home and they only have one remaining home game in non-conference play (Dec. 14 vs. Mississippi Valley State).
The Privateers have made a habit of getting extra possessions, averaging 10.8 steals per game. That total is a shade behind Southland leader, Texas A&M-Commerce who averages 10.83 steals per game. Individually,
DeArica Pryor paces all players in steals per game at 3.0. That total also ranks 28
th in the nation.
New Orleans has used five different lineups in as many games and eight different Privateers have started a game. Only
Nahja Scott and
Justice Ross have started all five contests for New Orleans entering the weekend.
The Privateers are also averaging 3.2 blocks per game, which is fifth in the Southland.
Nora Francois leads the team in blocks per game.
Wichita State has pounded the boards to the tune of 43.7 rebounds per game, which is 32
nd in the nation. They are outrebounding opponents by nearly 11 boards per game. Jane Asinde has three double-doubles this season for the Shockers.
The Shockers are on a five-game winning streak, the longest since 2018. That continued with a 61-54 win in their most recent outing against Denver. The Shockers have played two overtime games this season against Omaha and Montana.
Four Shockers average double figures in points, led by DJ McCarty who is at 13.6 points per game. McCarty scored a season-high 23 against Oral Roberts.
