HOUSTON, TX. -
Jordan Johnson's sharp shooting at Sharp Gymnasium was not enough to help New Orleans (3-9,0-1 SLC) overtake HCU (4-10,1-0 SLC) in an overtime loss 101-96 to end the 2022 year, but it was just enough to make Privateer history.
Johnson's 39 points are the most points scored by a Privateer since Jamie McNeily's 40 points against Denver, Johnson's former school, in 2007. His 39 points were the most scored by a Privateer on the road since Ledell Eackles scored 45 at FIU in 1988 and ties him for the eighth spot in most points scored in an individual game; a perfect fit since he also shot eight big three-pointers to lead both sides of the court. Johnson's eight made three point shots in a single game are tied for the third most made in school history. The record is nine - originally set by James Parlow in 2007 and matched by Bryson Robinson in 2019.
Johnson's 39 career points and eight made three-pointers were the most he's made in his collegiate career, both in NCAA Basketball (UNO/Denver) and Community College (Hinds). His 12 made field goals were the most he's made in collegiate career, both in NCAA Basketball (UNO/Denver) and Community College (Hinds) and the most made by a Privateer since
Derek St. Hilaire made 13 against McNeese on Jan. 16, 2021.
Shooting .765 from the arc, New Orleans broke the school record for highest three-point percentage in a game at 13-17. Back in 2015 against Abilene Christian, New Orleans shot .750 percent from three-point range at 9-12.
The conference opener also marked the most points (96) scored by the men in blue this season with four Privateers in double digit-scoring.
Khaleb Wilson-Rouse and
Simeon Kirkland touched 14 with Kirkland adding 11 to mark his first double-double of the season.
Daniel Sackey had a season-high night with nine points while
Tyson Jackson put up 11, his third straight game in double-digit scoring.
New Orleans fired off early with two shots from deep in under two minutes to lead HCU 6-4. Another couple of three-pointers extended the Privateers to its largest lead at ten points. Johnson drained a buzzer-beater three to put New Orleans in control 43-39 at the end of the first half giving him 20 points. New Orleans out shot HCU with 61.54 % from the field and 100% from the arc in the second half. Kirkland's good layup with 11 seconds left to tie the game at 84 sent New Orleans into OT where they were outdone 5-4 in field goals made and 6-3 from the charity stripe.
