Privateers Defeated by Kansas in Saturday Tilt

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers baseball team suffered their first loss of the 2022 season as they were defeated 8-2 by the Kansas Jayhawks on an overcast Saturday afternoon at Maestri Field.

DECISIONS
Dylan Porter (1-1) took the loss after allowing four runs (two earned) in 4.1 innings. Ryan Vanderhei picked up the win for Kansas after striking out seven and allowing two runs on five hits in 6.1 innings of work.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The game developed as a battle of pitchers through the first three innings. The Jayhawks were held without a hit until the fourth inning where they struck the scoreboard first. A leadoff single by Tavian Josenberger was followed by a double from Maui Ahuna. Then Nolan Metcalf singled in the first run and Tom Lichty drove in a second run on a sac fly.

The Jayhawks added two more runs in the fifth inning with one scoring on a wild pitch and another scoring on a Dylan Ditzenberger RBI single.

The Privateers pushed their first run across in the seventh. Drake Angeron came in and lined a single to center on the first pitch he saw. He stole second and was later brough home by Jeissy De la Cruz who had one of his two hits on the day.

The other run came in the seventh when Anthony Herron Jr. singled, scoring De la Cruz. The Privateers were held in check by Stone Hewlett who closed out the game with just one hit allowed in the final 2.2 innings.

INSIDE THE BOX
Angeron made his Privateer debut as a sixth inning replacement in the field and went 2-for-2 at the plate. Herron and De la Cruz also each had two hits. Andrew Duran and Matt Barthelemy each had scoreless innings of work in their season debuts.

Eight of the Jayhawks' 10 hits came from the first four batters in the lineup. Maui Ahuna went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs. Metcalf and Josenberger each added two hits.
