Women's Basketball Opens Southland Tournament vs. Northwestern State

NEW ORLEANS – The 7-seed New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team will start their Southland Conference tournament trek when they take on the 6-seed Northwestern State Lady Demons on Thursday at the Merrell Center. Tip is slated for 1:30 p.m.

SEASON SERIES
The two sides won in each other's building during the 2021-22 campaign. Northwestern State scored a 75-47 win at the Lakefront Arena. The Privateers returned the favor by defeating the Lady Demons 72-64 in Prather Coliseum.
 
All-time, the teams are level at 13 wins each but New Orleans has dominated the recent history of the series. The Privateers are 7-1 in their last eight games against the Natchitoches based school.
 
ALL-CONFERENCE SELECTIONS
Jomyra Mathis earned a spot on the Third Team and became the fifth different Privateer under Keeshawn Davenport to earn a spot on the postseason All-Southland team, joining Randi Brown, Shania Woods, Asia Woods and Rehema Franklin.
 
Mathis landed in the top 10 in the league in scoring (12.2 PPG), assists (3.3 APG) and steals (1.9 SPG). She was also second on the team in rebounding at 5.1 RPG.
 
DeArica Pryor became the first Privateer under Coach Davenport to earn a spot on the All-Defensive Team. Pryor led the Southland in steals at 2.4 per game and had 50 total. Her season-high was seven against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
 
NOTES
Tomyree Thompson scored a career-high 14 points in the last game of the regular season against Nicholls. It was Thompson's second game back after missing the previous nine due to injury.
 
The Privateers have turned out the assists in bunches of late. In their last three wins, New Orleans has dished out 53 assists as a team in wins against UIW, Northwestern State and Nicholls. Against UIW, the Privateers had their best assist-to-turnover ratio of the season at 21 assists to 12 turnovers.
 
New Orleans is searching for their first win in Katy. The Privateers are 0-3 in the Southland Tournament. In their fourth appearance, they and Southeastern were pulled off the floor when the tournament was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
