Privateers BrUNO Awards Honors 160 Student-Athletes

NEW ORLEANS, La. - New Orleans'  Privateers Athletics hosted the BrUNOs Award Show last week to celebrate the achievements of 160 student-athletes. Located at the Lakefront Airport, the blue-carpeted Espy esque event was hosted by TV personality and ABC Good Morning New Orleans Anchor Tamica Lee. Presenters included local news reporters and community leaders.

Winning student athlete of the year was men's tennis player Marcel Volz and women's tennis player Lina Hohnhold.

Marcel won the first Conference Player of the Year honor for the Privateers men's tennis team when he earned the honor this spring. Playing at Flight 1 throughout the year, Marcel won 24 matches (12 singles, 12 doubles).

Lina had an excellent career on the Lakefront including a 26-3 career record in singles over two seasons. This year, the First Team All-Southland selection won 15 consecutive singles matches heading into the conference tournament.

Men's tennis and women's cross country won team of the year. Against a tough schedule that featured three nationally ranked opponents, the Privateers tennis went 16-6 for the season. They started out fast with the best start in school history by winning their 1st 8 matches of the year.  They also closed strong by defeating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi twice this year including in the championship we hosted here at the Privateer Tennis Center.

The cross-country team finished second in three different meets and battled to the end with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with only one point separating the two teams in the Southland Championships. The team also finished second in the LSU Invitational and the Blazer Classic and turned in a top 10 finish at the South Central Regionals.
