Ismael Kone Selected as Greater New Orleans Athlete of the Month for May

NEW ORLEANS, La.- Privateers Track and Field student athlete Ismael Kone has been selected as the Greater New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the Month for May announced the Allstate Sugar Bowl Friday. Kone will compete next week at the NCAA DI 2022 Outdoor Track and volleyball & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

Kone is the fastest sprinter in New Orleans' history breaking the 10-second barrier in the 100-meter dash at the Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a time of 9.94 seconds that broke the school record and was the fastest time ever run at an SLC Outdoor Track & Field Championship meet.

The time was the third-best collegiate time in the nation this year and 13th in the world. Kone also won the 200-meter dash with a time of 20.59 and ran the third leg for the Privateers' 4x100-meter relay victory (40.08).

At the NCAA East Preliminaries in Bloomington, Ind., Kone qualified for the National Championships in the 100-meter dash with the third-best overall time (10.11) and the 200 with a time of 20.80.

The NCAA Championships are scheduled for June 8-11 in Eugene, Ore., with Kone competing in the 100-meter dash semifinals Wednesday 7:46 p.m. Central and the 200m semifinals at 8:44 p.m. Central.

Kone becomes the first Privateer Track & Field student-athlete to earn the award and the second student-athlete this year behind star hooper Derek St. Hilaire who received the honor in January.
