NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers used a strong service game early and a balanced attack to defeat the Xavier Gold Nuggets 3-1 (25-16, 25-21, 22-25, 25-22) in an exhibition on Saturday afternoon at the Human Performance Center.
INSIDE THE BOX
Trinity Jackson and
Mauri Carver co-led the squad with eight kills apiece.
Molly Kehoe added six including the match clincher.
Courtney Roundtree and
Sophia Ewalefo each notched five kills. Each setter got a set with
Kamryn Scroggins notching 22 assists.
Maite Solabarrieta added 10 assists and
Claire Turner posted eight.
Defensively,
Sheilah Purcell led the way in digs with 10.
Micah Hall added nine.
Sydney Gott posted four total blocks. Purcell, Gott and
Rita Zecchin each had two service aces for a team that posted 10 on the afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
New Orleans hit .355 in the opening set while limiting Xavier to a .121 attack percentage. The Privateers had 15 kills in 31 attempts. There was only one lead change in the opening set. The Privateers persevered through a set that featured seven ties and four lead changes.
After Xavier took the third set, the Privateers fired back with a late rally. Trailing 17-14, New Orleans went on a 7-2 spurt to take a two-point lead. Xavier quickly tied the score at 21-21 but three consecutive New Orleans points put the home side on the brink of victory. A Kehoe kill sealed matters in the prelude to the regular season which starts next week.
NEXT UP
The Privateers will play in the DC Classic starting next Friday when they face George Washington, Georgetown and George Mason.
