NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers volleyball team will begin their 2022 season on Friday when they face the George Washington Colonials at the Charles Smith Center. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. The Privateers will then play two matches on Saturday against Georgetown and George Mason as part of the DC Challenge.
A roster of 17 with 11 being newcomers to the squad will set forth on the 2022 trek that includes 30 matches.
The Privateers won their exhibition last Saturday when they defeated Xavier (La.) 3-1. Five different players had at least five kills with
Trinity Jackson and
Mauri Carver co-leading the way with eight kills each.
New Orleans also showed a very competitive service game in the exhibition. That showed to the tune of 10 service aces recorded by seven different players.
Defensively,
Sheilah Purcell played three sets and had 10 digs after coming off a year that was statistically one of the best in terms of digs in program history. Purcell recorded the third highest single season total in digs per set last year.
The Privateers have only played George Washington previously and that was in September 1993. The Colonials won that match 3-0 at the George Washington Invitational.
ABOUT THE COMPETITION
George Washington is coming off a 2-25 season in 2021. The Colonials have six newcomers to the squad including two Division I transfers in Grace Allread (Liberty) and Brittany Myers (Rhode Island).
Georgetown finished 7-22 a season ago. Mary Grace Goyena returns after a freshman campaign that saw her lead the squad in kills with 268.
The weekend closes against George Mason who finished 5-22 last year. The Patriots are led by a new head coach as Megan Shifflett Bachmann was announced in early July, becoming the eighth head coach in program history.
