NEW ORLEANS – Sophomore
Alexandra Weir was named co-Newcomer of the Year by the Louisiana Sportswriters Association on Friday afternoon. The LWSA also honored eight other Privateer Track and Field student-athletes as All-Louisiana selections.
Outdoor personal bests this season for Alexandra included a first-place time of 9:49.92 in the 3000M at the Samford Bulldog Invitational, and a third-place 4:53.97 mile at the Aggie Invitational. She set two school records with a 2:10.35 in the 800 at the J Fred Duckett Twilight meet, and a 4:25.71 in the 1500M at the Lee University Last Chance.
Weir joins teammate
Arina Kleshchukova (2019), Brandon Knight (2013), Jessica Stone (2013) and Diana Jepchirchir (2005) as New Orleans' student-athletes who earned LSWA Newcomer of the Year status. The Toronto native shares the award this year with Morgan Smalls of LSU.
NCAA 100M Semifinalist
Ismael Kone earned All-Louisiana recognition for his times in both the 100M and 200M dashes, becoming just the second Privateer to earn All-Louisiana in multiple events since the program's rebirth prior to the 2012-2013 season. His 100M time of 9.94 during the Southland Championships was the third fastest time in the NCAA this season, and a school record.
Ismael, along with
Julian Forde, Elliot Cummings and
Mason Melancon were part of a 4x100 squad whose time of 39.63 at the LSU Alumni Golf in April was the third fastest time in Louisiana this year.
Distance runners
Parker McBride and
Kolyn Saltzman both had the fastest times in the 800M and 3000M Steeplechase respectively among Pelican State student-athletes this season. McBride's school record time of 1:48.46 came at the Lee University Last Chance meet in May, while Saltzman's 8:58.65 Steeplechase run at the J Fred Duckett Twilight meet was also a school record.
Graduate student
Mathilde Helms-Kjaer was the sole women's runner to earn All-Louisiana for UNO after her 15
th-place finish in the Texas Relays with a time of 37:18.49 in the 10,000M, the third best time in Louisiana this season.
Rounding out the honors for the Privateers were
Vojislav Gvero and
Samantha Dyson who each had the second-best throw in Louisiana this season. Gvero finished first at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships with a distance of 63.33 meters in the hammer throw. He also set a personal best in the discus at the Joe Walker Invitational in April. He also qualified for the NCAA East Regionals in the hammer throw.
Dyson had two podium finishes at the Southland Outdoor Championships. Her mark of 50.34 meters won the hammer throw and her personal best in the discus (49.38 meters) was good for second at the Southland Championships.
