NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans Privateer Cross Country program got their season underway with a successful opening meet on Friday evening. Both the men and women finished in third place, and a combined five runners broke school records.

Upperclassmen Kolyn Saltzman, Alexandra Weir and Rebecca DeKay led the way for the Privateers with a pair of third-place finishes and a fourth-place finish respectively. Saltzman finished his race almost a minute faster than his previous effort at Lake Oaks Park back in 2019. Michelle Folk's time was a two-minute improvement on her time on the same course three years ago.

Saltzman (14:56.54), Jaden Forester (15:08.50), Weir (13:23.81), DeKay (13:37.85), and Folk (14:18.22) all broke the previous school records for times in a cross county 4K and 5K on Friday evening.

Three Privateer men and a pair of Privateer women made their debuts for New Orleans with DeKay's debut splash leading the newcomers.  Freshmen Mason Appleton finished 25th with a time of 16:00.35, Antonio Sanchez finished 38th with a time of 16:36.29, and Antonio Delgado finished 47th with a time of 17:07.42 for the men. On the women's side Tshwanelo Maruping made her Div. I debut with a 23rd place finish at 14:29.70 alongside of DeKay.

As a team, the men finished with 81 points, behind Tulane, who won the event with 23 points, and LSU, who finished at 51 points. Both Saltzman and Forester placed in the top-10 individually. The women finished at 66 points behind winner LSU, who finished at 38 points, and second-place Tulane, who finished with 56 points.

Individually, Aaron Gilliam of Tulane won the men's race with a time of 14:43.30, while Louisiana's Sophie Daigle won the women's race with a time of 13:07.64.
