DAY ONE RESULTS
NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans Sprinters and Jumpers placed three runners in tomorrow's finals, in addition to a pair of third-place finishes to cap a strong first day at the IU Relays on Friday.
Perhaps the highlight of the afternoon came from freshman
Alimot Alowonle and her third-place finish in the women's long jump. Alimot's first jump as a Privateer went 5.44 meters and was the longest jump by a Privateer since 2017. Two jumps later she surpassed that mark with a jump of 5.67 meters to take home a third-place finish in her collegiate debut.
Vivette Green and
Mason Melancon both qualified for the 60M finals tomorrow – set for 10:15 a.m. and 10:20 a.m. respectively. Green finished her heat in first place with a time of 7.67 out of lane four. Melancon qualified after finishing in third place in his heat with a time of 6.87, a new personal best for the senior.
Helen Baumgarten qualified for her first finals appearance as a Privateer after finishing with a personal best of 8.92 in the 60-meter hurdles. The freshman finished second in her heat and will compete again tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. Later in the evening the Baden Baden native won her 200-meter heat with a time of 25:05 before finishing in sixth place out of 33 competitors.
Western Michigan transfer
Sarinity Bracey just missed qualifying for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.11 – the ninth-best mark among the 20 competitors.
Sophomore
Christopher Murphy and Junior
Nicholaus Smith battled it out for third place in the men's long jump. Both finished even with a best jump of 6.85 meters before Murphy's second-best jump of 6.84 meters gave him the podium finish.
Closing out the night both Baumgarten and
Jayden Sloan finished sixth in the 200 meters with personal bests of 25.05 and 21.88 respectively.

ASSISTANT COACH BEN HIBBERT
"I thought it was a good first day. We came here looking to run fast and came out of day one with several season bests and personal bests. We'll look to come back tomorrow and build on those races. We'll be in some quality finals races that should give us a great chance to compete."
(on Alimot Alowonle's debut)
We are thrilled to have Ali with us. She is already a great addition and started to show why today. She is full of talent, and the future is bright for that young lady!"
