AUBURN, Ala. –
Marcel Volz advanced to the second round in the main draw of the ITA Southern Regionals over the weekend hosted by Auburn. The Privateers also had a couple of wins in the singles qualifying draw.
Volz was entered directly into the main draw and he came up with a strong win in his opening round. He beat Noah Schlagenhauf of Ole Miss 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the round of 32. Schlagenhauf, a sophomore in Oxford, reached a career-best ITF ranking of 34 in singles at the end of 2022 and won 12 matches in his first season with the Rebels.
Volz lost in the second round of the main draw to Benito Sanchez Martinez of Mississippi State who won 23 matches overall in his freshman campaign last season.
David Tesic earned a win in the first round of the qualifying draw against an LSU opponent when he beat freshman, Charles Hobbs. Tesic didn't drop a game in the second set of his 6-4, 6-0 win. He was knocked out of the qualifying draw by 4-seed, Javier Montoya of South Alabama.
Joseph Townes and
Luke Joujan also won their first round qualifying matches. Townes scored a win in three sets against Samford's Yerassyl Murat 2-6, 7-6 (4), 10-6. Joujan breezed past Pasawee Reansuwong of Southern Miss 6-1, 6-1.
The doubles teams had it tough with the draw. All four were eliminated in the first round but they all faced seeded opponents and two teams went against the 1 and 3-seed in the tournament. Joujan and
Mark Armbruster faced the 1-seed Nikola Slavic and Lukas Engelhardt of Ole Miss. Volz and
Matthew Armbruster squared off against Chen Dong and Stefan Latinovic, the 3-seed representing LSU.
Matthew Armbruster and Joujan both picked up consolation match wins. Armbruster became the second Privateer to beat Hobbs as he won by a 6-1, 6-2 scoreline while Joujan beat Tulane's Will Kesterson 6-3, 6-0.
