HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team held their own against tough competition at the Golden Eagle Fall Invitational in Hattiesburg which took place over the last three days.
On the final day of the weekend, the Privateers earned two singles wins against opponents from Tulane and one from Louisiana.
Matthew Armbruster, who went 2-1 in singles matches over the weekend, easily topped Sam Scherer 6-2, 6-1. Scherer was 4-2 in limited action last spring as a freshman.
Also, true freshman,
Sergio Tintore won his match against Will Kesterson. Tintore took the first set in a double break and held through a tiebreak in the second set to win 6-2, 7-6.
The third win on Sunday came from another freshman in
Joseph Townes. He squared off against Grant Landreth of Louisiana and won 6-3, 6-3.
Two doubles teams also won on Sunday. Townes paired up with
Marc Mail as they scored a win against Shamirul Shahril and Dakotah Bobo of Southern Miss by a 6-3 scoreline. Bobo was mainly the Golden Eagles' flight one player in singles last season.
Tintore and
David Tesic also scored their second doubles victory of the weekend when they defeated Pawin Jirapoomdaje and Rasmus Becker of Southern Miss 6-4. They also had a 7-5 win against Juan Accossatto and Theo Mottier of South Alabama on Friday.
Townes had a perfect weekend in singles at 3-0. He beat Braden Hanning of South Alabama 6-4, 6-2 on Saturday and Becker of Southern Miss 7-6 (5), 6-2 on Friday.
Luke Joujan also picked up a singles win by rallying from a set down to defeat Saheb Sodhi 2-6, 6-2, 10-6. And
Mark Armbruster scored two wins on Saturday. He won his singles match 6-0, 6-3 against Mottier and paired with his brother for a 6-3 win against Mason and Grant Landreth of Louisiana.
