NEW ORLEANS – New Orleans head women's basketball coach, Trelanne Powell recently conducted a speaking engagement with the legendary former women's basketball professional and now author, Seimone Augustus.
Coach Powell talked with Augustus about the release of her recent book, Hoop Muses during an event which also featured a book signing from the former LSU and Minnesota Lynx star. Augustus played in the WNBA from 2006-2020 where she earned many accolades.
Coach Powell was the moderator for the evening and was joined by her team as part of a Privateer Enrichment event.
"It was a tremendous honor to sit and hear from such a pillar in the sport of women's basketball," said Coach Powell. "Seimone and I are close in age so as a huge fan I watched her college and professional career evolve. I'm grateful for her and Kate Fagan loving this game so much that they want to keep the history of our game at the forefront as it continues to advance. I hope that young athletes everywhere will read and enjoy these stories as I did.
Seimone was a four-time WNBA champion, won a Finals MVP (2011) and was an All-WNBA selection six times. At LSU, Seimone was a two-time All-American, a Naismith Award, Wooden Award and Wade Trophy winner. She was also the first female student-athlete in LSU history to have her number retired.
Powell was announced in April of 2023 as the sixth head coach in program history. Since then, she and her staff have worked toward not only building a championship caliber team on the court but continuing the standard of being a strong presence in the community.
"It was a huge honor to be able to gain more knowledge of the game and motivation from a legend who is an advocate of equality in our sport," said senior student-athlete,
Nahja Scott. "Seimone Augustus helped pave the way for women's basketball today."
Since Coach Powell took the job, her staff and the team have continued to be involved in community initiatives and enrichment events. That has so far included working with the Power Coalition, volunteering at the New Orleans Saints Kickoff Run and hearing from professional athletes in Augustus and Taneka Rubin.
