Privateers Make Return Trip to Alcorn State to Close Non-Conference Play

NOTES

NEW ORLEANS
– The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team will close out their non-conference slate with a return trip to Lorman when they face the Alcorn State Braves. Tip is scheduled for 12 p.m. on Wednesday at the Davey L. Whitley Complex.

The Privateers are coming off a 67-59 win against Tarleton State in front of the second-largest crowd in program history. DeArica Pryor and Jayla Kimbrough combined for 29 points and the Privateers never trailed after the end of the first quarter.

Pryor's 16 points put her at 905 for her collegiate career (including Creighton totals). She is at 802 points just at New Orleans. To achieve 1,000 career points on the Lakefront, Pryor would need to average at least 10.4 points per game for the rest of the regular season.

Head Coach Trelanne Powell is now two wins away from earning her 100th NCAA victory. Powell had 96 victories in five seasons at Tuskegee before coming to the Lakefront this season.

The Privateers are looking for consecutive wins against Alcorn State for the first time in program history. New Orleans has beaten the Braves in 4-of-7 meetings but each of the prior three wins have been followed by a loss.

New Orleans defeated Alcorn State earlier this season in their home opener at the Lakefront Arena. The Privateers scored a 53-42 decision behind a defense that forced 24 turnovers and held the Braves to 27.6 percent from the field. Calderon (14) and Justice Ross (11) both landed in double-figures in points.

The Privateers allowed an average of 22 free throw attempts to their first two opponents of the season. Since then, that number has gone down to 12.6 attempts per game over the last eight. They've held three opponents (Houston, Tulane, UCF) to single digit free throw tries.

ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Alcorn State was locked in a defensive battle but just fell short in a 49-47 loss at Louisiana Tech last Saturday. The Braves led narrowly heading into the fourth quarter but were outscored 12-8 in the final 10 minutes.

Zy'nyia White leads the Braves in scoring at 10.4 points per game. Nakia Cheatham is averaging 9.0 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.

WE ARE YOUR KREWE
For 54 seasons, Privateer student-athletes have had the unique experience of wearing New Orleans across their chests.  Like the city itself, our sports teams have been fueled by resiliency, grit, and the unquenchable desire to win.  Our city also houses the nation's biggest celebration each year. And much like a Mardi Gras parade krewe, we are tethered to our community through pride, tradition, a culture of acceptance, and finally our commitment to show that New Orleans is a world-class city to live, learn, play and work. We invite you to become more involved with the only University that truly represents New Orleans all day, every day.  Join #NOLAsTeam, We Are Your Krewe!
