Privateers Host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, UIW to Open February

NOTES

NEW ORLEANS
– The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team will start another crucial week at home when they face the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders and the UIW Cardinals. The games against the respective opponents will take place at Lakefront Arena on Thursday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m.

Thursday will be Greek Night at the Lakefront. All Greeks are encouraged to wear their letters and students will have a chance to win free pizza for an entire year at halftime. Saturday will be Faculty and Staff Appreciation. We will also have Academic Honors Night on Saturday to recognize our student-athletes who achieved a 3.0 GPA or better last semester.

The Privateers are coming off a demonstrative win against Southeastern last Saturday. New Orleans won 59-42 against the Lady Lions. They held Southeastern to 27.8 percent from the field, which was the lowest field goal percentage an opponent converted at since Feb. 26, 2020. That day, the Privateers held Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to 26.1 percent from the field.

New Orleans (4-14, 3-6) has upped their conversion rate at the free throw line since conference play started. The Privateers have hit at 80 percent or better from the charity stripe in four of the last six games. Their free throw percentage since conference play started is second in the league at 74.8 percent.

Hennessey Luu-Brown enters the week with a steal in 13 consecutive games after recording two against Southeastern. Luu-Brown is averaging 1.8 steals per game on the year which is tied for sixth in the Southland. Offensively, Luu-Brown is averaging 12.2 points per game in Southland contests.

The Privateers are looking to break through against the Islanders who have controlled the overall series. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (13-7, 8-1) has won eight straight against the Privateers.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won the first meeting against the Privateers 58-45 on Jan. 14. The conference-leading Islanders are first in the league in scoring margin at 6.2. Alecia Westbrook is the only Southland player who is averaging a double-double this season (11.9 points and 10.1 rebounds per game).

UIW (8-11, 3-6) defeated New Orleans 61-55 in San Antonio on Jan. 7. The Cardinals have not won a game (0-8) on the road. Nina De Leon Negron ranks in the top five in the Southland in assists (3.1 per game) and steals (2.2 per game).
