OFFICIAL SOUTHLAND RELEASE
NEW ORLEANS – Tshwanelo Maruping collected her second Southland "Newcomer of the Year" award this season after being named Southland Indoor Track and Field Newcomer of the Year by the league office on Monday morning.
The junior transfer out of Monroe College continued to build on her Cross Country performances earning Third-Team All-Southland Honors for a pair of bronze medals at the Southland Indoor Championships in the mile and the DMR.
At the conclusion of the indoor campaign, 'Nelo had the sixth best mile time (4:57.29), and the eighth-best 3000 meter time (9:59.77) on the Southland performance lists. Both times came when it mattered the most for New Orleans – at the 2022 Southland Indoor Championships.
Maruping has played a major role in the women's TFXC success this season – finishing in third place for the program's first ever Southland women's championship and earning 14 points at the Southland Indoor Championships – helping the Privateer women to their most ever points total at the event.
She becomes the first Privateer to win both the Southland Cross Country Newcomer of the Year, and Southland Indoor Track and Field Newcomer of the Year in the same season.
In addition to Maruping's selections, the conference announced that several Privateers were officially All-Southland.
Alimot Alowonle (long jump) earned a spot on the First Team. Second teamers included
Vivette Green (60M, 200M),
Jaden Forester (mile),
Alexandra Weir (mile) and third teamers were
Kelvin Chiku (800),
Ariana Jimenez (5000M, DMR),

"I am so happy and proud of 'Nelo to see her honored as the Southland Newcomer of the Year for this Indoor season. She did a great job stepping up for our group which ultimately led to our highest team finish at the Southland Championships. Since joining us in August, Nelo has been such a blessing as a teammate, athlete, and friend - winning Newcomer of the Year in both cross country and Indoor is a true testament to all of her hard work"
