THIBODAUX, La. - In its first day of Clash on the Bayou, the New Orleans beach volleyball team posted a 5-0 sweep over Loyola (N.O.) followed by a 5-0 sweep over LaGrange.
While New Orleans (4-2) defeated LaGrange in straight sets throughout the lineup, they also had five flights including the exhibition flight to beat the Wolf Pack in straight sets. They also did not let opponents within five points.
Ania Esarte and Maria Ozeata battled back against Loyola after going down in set two to take sets 21-19 and 15-8 in sets one and three to win on court one. Against LaGrange, Esarte and Ozeata cruised through straight sets only allowing opponents as much as five points (21-4, 21-5).
Trinity Jackson and
Alexa Spartz quickly defeated Loyola's twos 21-14, 21-6. They carried the momentum over to their next match where they allowed as much a seven points in their victory over the Panthers (21-5, 21-7). Courts three and four also beat Loyola in straight sets, with
Ashley Salazar and Ivana de Carvalho clinching the match after turning in a 21-14, 21-14 win on flight three. Salazar and Carvalho held the Panthers to nine and eleven in straight set wins (21-9, 21-11).
Hannah Volpi made her season debut at court four against the Panthers in dominant fashion with a 21-7, 21-5 victory.
Rita Zecchin and
Serena Baumgart rounded out the match against Loyola on court five with a 21-16, 21-10 decision to complete the 5-0 sweep.
The Privateers will close out the tournament in Thibodaux with two more matches on Saturday, playing ULM at 11a.m. and Nicholls at 1:30 p.m.
