NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team enters the week with a shot to clinch the outright regular season title. They will face the Lamar Cardinals in their last Southland regular season match on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Privateer Tennis Center.
New Orleans (11-5, 4-0) topped Texas A&M-CC 4-3 last Thursday. They followed that up with a convincing 6-1 win against UIW. The latter clinched at least a share of the regular season title for the Privateers. Lamar is the only team who can mathematically tie New Orleans.
The Privateers continue to get strong performances in doubles.
Max Heinzel and
Luke Joujan have now reached the double-digit mark in wins as a team. Their comeback victory from 4-1 down against UIW helped the Privateers seal the doubles point on Saturday. As a team, New Orleans is 28-14 in doubles matches this spring.
In singles,
Espen Lagarde's winning streak has continued into this week. Lagarde has won seven in a row and has a 10-4 mark on the season. He won both of his matches in singles last week in three sets against Mathieu Peres (AMCC) and Arnau Miralles (UIW).
New Orleans would clinch their first outright regular season title since joining the Southland. The Privateers won a share of the championship in the regular season last year.
Lamar (9-9, 1-1) would need to win out to catch the Privateers in the standings. The Cardinals defeated Nicholls 4-3 but lost 5-2 to UIC on Mar. 25. The remaining schedule has Lamar at UIW on Apr. 7 and home for Texas A&M-CC on Apr. 14.
Max Amling has played primarily at flight one and has nine singles wins on the season. Amling and Filippo Salsini have a 10-4 mark in doubles.
