OFFICIAL SOUTHLAND RELEASE
NEW ORLEANS – Jayden Sloan and
Rebecca DeKay were named Southland Outdoor Track and Field Newcomers of the Year by the league office on Friday morning. In addition, 15 individual Privateers, and the women's 4x100 relay team were confirmed as All-Southland honorees.
Jayden Sloan became the first Privateer to win a Southland Championship in the 400 meter hurdles finishing in 51.19 and setting a school record in the process. Sloan's victory in Commerce was his second 400-meter hurdles win of the year following his first place finish at the Louisiana Classics to kick off the 2023 Outdoor season.
Sloan's time at the Southland Championships ranks second on the Southland Performance List and 25
th in the NCAA East Region, and he was part of a 4x100 relay team at the LSU Alumni Gold that finished in 39.75 – fourth in the Southland and 22
nd in the NCAA East Region.
Running in her first career 10K, DeKay took home Southland gold with a time of 37:31.24. Rebecca also finished second in the 5K at the Southland Championships The sophomore also had the best 5K performance for the Privateer women this year after clocking a 16:58:31 at the Bryan Clay Invitational in April.
Fifteen different New Orleans student-athletes earned All-Southland status for finishing top-three in their discipline at the Southland Championships. DeKay,
Ariana Jimenez,
Kolyn Saltzman, and
Alexandra Weir all earned multiple All-Southland selections.
