NEW ORLEANS – University of New Orleans Track and Field members
Kelvin Chiku,
Christopher Murphy and
Nicholaus Smith finished off their regular seasons at Lee University's Last Chance meet in Cleveland, Tenn. on Saturday afternoon.
Kelvin Chiku set a new personal best in his quest to qualify for the NCAA East Regional at 800M. Fresh off a disappointing Southland Championship final that saw him finish in over two minutes, the junior from Zimbabwe was back on form – clocking in at 1:49.88 – his first run at the distance in under 1:50 in his career.
Due to problems with the jumping ramp at last week's Southland Championships both
Nicholaus Smith, and
Christopher Murphy traveled to the Volunteer State looking to reestablish jumps that would qualify them for a trip to Jacksonville, Fla. In two weeks.
Smith fouled on two of his four triple jump attempts before eventually finishing with a mark of 14.22 meters. Murphy finished fourth overall in the long jump with a jump of 7.21 meters on his first attempt. Smith's best long jump on Saturday went 6.58 meters, good for 11th place.
The NCAA qualifying lists are set to officially be released early in the week. The top 48 individual marks in each event qualify for East and West Regionals, with the top 24 relay teams qualifying as well. Any Privateer that qualifies will be sent to Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla to participate between May 24-27.
