NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers volleyball team will open their 2023 season in Atlanta with three matches. The Privateers will face Chattanooga, Georgia State and South Carolina State as part of the GSU Invitational.

New Orleans is coming off a 2022 season that saw several highlights that included their best home start in program history (9-0) and finishing 13
th in the nation in digs per set. This year offers a second consecutive season with double-digit newcomers (12 in all).
The Privateers will face off against Chattanooga in the season opener. New Orleans has won four regular season openers in the last six years including last year when the Privateers went up to Washington D.C. and beat George Washington.
Coach
Ashley Preston is beginning her third season on the Lakefront and has a new staff this year with assistants, Tamia Dockery and
Mauri Carver. Dockery was part of four championship teams as a student-athlete at Howard and Carver just finished her collegiate playing career last season in New Orleans after finishing in the top ten in the Southland in hitting percentage and blocks in her lone season with the Privateers.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS
Chattanooga won their exhibition 3-1 against Tennessee Tech. The Mocs were 17-16 overall and 10-6 in the Southern Conference. Head coach, Julie Torbett is entering her 30
th season at the helm and is 15 wins away from 500 for her career.
The host, Georgia State Panthers finished with a 7-22 mark overall and a 3-13 record in the Sun Belt. The Panthers named two new assistant coaches in Tina Predojevic and Alesha Wilson. Georgia State has eight newcomers to their squad.
South Carolina State went 0-26 last season and won one set on the year. Melissa Robinson was announced as the new head coach of the program in January. Robinson played for SCSU from 2009-11 and ranks second in program history in digs. She was part of the 2010 team that won the MEAC title.
