Women's Basketball Travels to Nicholls, Hosts A&M-Corpus Christi

NICHOLLS NOTES

NEW ORLEANS
– The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team will begin the second week of conference play on the road against Nicholls on Thursday evening. New Orleans will then return home for a contest against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday. The game times are 6:30 and 2 p.m. respectively and both games will be carried on ESPN Plus.

New Orleans split a pair of games in the first week of conference action. The Privateers put up a season-high 88 points in a win against Texas A&M-Commerce and lost a 57-44 decision to defending Southland champion, Southeastern on Saturday.

Jayla Kimbrough averaged 15 points over the first two games. Over her last eight games, Kimbrough is averaging 12.8 points per contest. Kimbrough is at 130 points this season. She had 13 career points at UNO heading into this year.

Heading into the week, the Privateers are averaging 12.2 offensive rebounds per game, tied for fourth most in the Southland and only trailing UIW (13.8), Lamar (12.4) and McNeese (12.4).
Last season, the Privateers swept their first season series against Nicholls since joining the Southland in 2013. They also surpassed 80 points in both meetings. It's the first time they did that in consecutive games against Nicholls since 1983-84.

New Orleans had eight steals against the Lady Lions. It was the third-most steals against a Southeastern team this season only behind LSU (11) and Mississippi State (10). The Lady Lions' non-conference strength of schedule this season was 31st in the country.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS
Nicholls (7-7, 1-1) has already surpassed their win total from last season (5) under first year head coach, Justin Payne. The Colonels scored a non-conference win against Tulane, their first over the Green Wave since 1991.

Lexi Alexander is fifth in the Southland in scoring at 13.7 points per game. Betzalys Delgado has 46 assists second most in the conference.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (9-4, 2-0) started with wins against HCU and UIW. The Islanders survived against a game UIW team by scoring a 63-61 win. UIW outscored the Islanders 20-12 in the fourth but a three-pointer that would have won the game missed the mark.

Alecia Westbrook became the first Southland Player of the Year in program history in 2022-23. Westbrook was the conference's leading rebounder a season ago. This season, Westbrook is averaging 11.2 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.

WE ARE YOUR KREWE
For 54 seasons, Privateer student-athletes have had the unique experience of wearing New Orleans across their chests.  Like the city itself, our sports teams have been fueled by resiliency, grit, and the unquenchable desire to win.  Our city also houses the nation's biggest celebration each year. And much like a Mardi Gras parade krewe, we are tethered to our community through pride, tradition, a culture of acceptance, and finally our commitment to show that New Orleans is a world-class city to live, learn, play and work. We invite you to become more involved with the only University that truly represents New Orleans all day, every day.  Join #NOLAsTeam, We Are Your Krewe!
