OFFICIAL SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE RELEASE
NEW ORLEANS – After breaking school records in back-to-back weeks graduate student Sophia Wolf has been named the Southland Conference's Track Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week.
Wolf broke a 23-year old school record when she won the 800M with a time of 2:08.71 last Friday at the Samford Invitational. Wolf's time broke the former record – set by Michaela Mannova in 2001 – by almost four seconds. At the time the race was finished her mark ranked No. 2 in the South Central Region and No. 16 nationally, placing her in line for a spot at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
As it stands today, her time still ranks No. 8 in the region, and No. 27 nationally. It's also seven seconds faster than the next best time in the Southland this season.
Her time in Birmingham would also break the school's outdoor 800M record - held by teammate Alexandra Weir - by two seconds. Friday's mark also ranks No. 5 all time in the Southland Conference (in any meet) and is faster than any indoor 800M Southland Conference Championship winning performance dating back to 1988.
It is the second consecutive season that a Privateer has won multiple Southland Track Athlete of the Week awards after Jaden Forester won twice last season. Sophia is also the first Privateer – male or female – to win the award in back-to-back weeks.
