NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans cross country teams will conclude their regular season on Friday morning at the Arturo Barrios Invitational hosted by Texas A&M.
Two seasons ago New Orleans ran in its first Arturo Barrios Invitational – the women finished ninth and the men finished 13
th.
Mason Appleton,
Antonio Delgado, and
Gary Sandrock ran for the Privateer men that morning, while
Oxana Bonjorn-Giros ran for the women.
The squads returned to the Watts Cross Country Course a little under a month later with a pair of sixth place finishes at the NCAA South Central Regionals – the best regional finishes for both programs in school history.
The Privateer women, currently ranked No. 11 in the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association's South Central Regional, won both the team and individual titles two weeks ago at Nicholls Farms. It was the first team victory since the 2022 Southland Championship, and
Sophia Wolf was the first individual victory since Arina Kleshchukova won the 2019 Southland title.
Five Privateer women finished inside the top-10, six inside the top-11 with everyone finishing inside the top-20 on their way to victory. The team total of 30 points was the lowest in nearly a decade, and UNO finished ahead of the South Region's No. 2 team Alabama, and the South Central Regional's No. 2 team Tulane.
Of the scheduled runners for the Privateer women only Bonjorn-Giros and
Emma Bourg have run 6,000 meters collegiately – both set personal bests at last year's Crimson Classic with times of 22:18.9 and 21:42.8 respectively.
The Privateer men finished second two weeks ago at Nicholls Farms, trailing only Alabama. Four of the five Privateers who ran finished inside the top 20 with Delgado finishing 22
nd.
Josh Johnston set a new school record at four miles with a time of 19:17.44 – good for fifth place. Hunter and
Mason Appleton both added their names to the school record books as well with times of 20:30.70 and 20:41.79 – good for fifth and sixth all time in program history.
Collegiate bests at 8,000 meters for the Privateer men scheduled to run on Friday include: 25:23.0 for
Mason Appleton at last season's Southland Championships, 25:25.0 for Sandrock at last season's Southland Championships, and 26:48.7 for Delgado at last season's Southern Showcase.
Senior
Kenneth Cerrato will make his Privateer debut after joining the team last week, and
Darryl George Jr. will run his first cross country race for the Privateers after a successful campaign on the track last season.
The men's 8K will start at 8:30 a.m. with the women's 6K to follow at 9:15 a.m. Live timing results with milt splits available
