New Orleans Beach Volleyball Caps Opening Weekend With Historic 4-1 Win Over Oregon Ducks

NEW ORLEANS - The New Orleans Beach Volleyball team (2-2) concluded their opening weekend at the Green Wave Invitational with a historic 4-1 victory over Oregon on Saturday afternoon, marking their first win over a Power 5 institution in program history. However, despite their strong performance, the Privateers finished the weekend 2-2 overall, falling short in a close 3-2 match against Stephen F. Austin earlier in the day.

In the battle against the LadyJacks, New Orleans fought valiantly but ultimately dropped three matches that each went down to a deciding set.

The Privateers managed to secure two points, with junior Serena Baumgart and freshman Anne Marie Hardouin winning at flight three, and Senior Bria Garmon and sophomore Maria Ozaeta triumphing at flight two. Baumgart and Hardouin secured victory in two sets, while Garmon and Ozaeta rallied from a second-set slump to claim a decisive 15-11 win in the third set, clinching the match against SFA.

Against the Ducks, flights two, three, and four dominated, winning their matches in straight sets. Baumgart and Hardouin continued their impressive debut as a pair, clinching victory at flight three with scores of 21-17 and 21-19, maintaining an undefeated weekend by defeating all opponents in straight sets.

Meanwhile, Hannah Volpi and Valerie Vujnovich battled Oregon at flight one, pushing to a third set where they secured victory with a commanding 15-9 win. Garmon and Ozaeta also performed strongly, allowing the Ducks just seven points in the second set as they achieved a 3-1 record on the season at flight two.

Junior Ivana De Carvalho Peixe and freshman Nikelle Lander easily dispatched the Ducks, conceding only seven points in the first set before sealing a 21-15 win in the second set, bringing their season record to 3-1. The Ducks managed to secure their sole point at flight five with two closely contested wins over sophomore Savvanah Moberly and freshman Stefanie Gonzalez.

UP NEXT: New Orleans will travel to Thibodaux from Friday, March 1, to Saturday, March 2, to face their first Southland opponents in Nicholls State and Southeastern, alongside matchups against Mary Hardin-Baylor and William Carey at the Bayou Battle.
