Privateers Open Southland Tournament Against Nicholls

LAKE CHARLES, La. – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team will tip off their first round game of the Southland Tournament when they face the Nicholls Colonels on Monday at the Legacy Center. Tip is slated for 1:30 p.m.
 
The Privateers finished the regular season tied for fifth but Texas A&M-Commerce won the tiebreaker. New Orleans will be facing a Nicholls squad they swept in two regular season meetings. The Privateers have a five-game winning streak over the Colonels and New Orleans has scored over 70 points in four of those wins.
 
DeArica Pryor added to her growing list of achievements with a Second Team All-Southland selection. Pryor has been a two-time All-Conference Player, two-time All-Defensive selection, an All-Louisiana selection and a five-time Southland Player of the Week. Pryor finished the regular season fourth in points (14.3) and third in steals (1.9) in the Southland.
 
Jayla Kimbrough did not get a lot of playing time last season, her first since a medical redshirt in 2021-22. This year, a fully healthy Kimbrough was a force for the Privateers. She had 14 double figure scoring efforts and averaged 10.2 points per game. Last season, Kimbrough played in 12 games and scored 13 total points.
 
Alexis Calderon earned a spot on the Southland All-Defensive Team after notching 72 steals to date. She ranks 42nd in the nation in total steals and 33rd in steals per game. The single season record by a Privateer for steals is 113 (Marylou Agustin, 1999-2000).
 
Head Coach Trelanne Powell with a win would match her first season at Tuskegee. Powell took the 2018-19 Tuskegee squad to a first round victory in the conference tournament.
 
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Nicholls finished the regular season 13-17 overall and 7-11 in conference. Britiya Curtis was named Southland Freshman of the Year after finishing the regular season with a scoring average of 10.8 points per game.
 
As a team, the Colonels were second in the conference in made three-pointers. They sank 179 triples as a team on the season. Curtis and Mikayla Etienne combined to make 93 triples on the year. Lexi Alexander was named Second Team All-Southland after finishing in the top ten in points and rebounds.
