NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's and women's tennis teams will have a busy week mostly at home with five matches combined. Four of the five matches will take place at the Privateer Tennis Center.
WOMEN'S PREVIEW
The women will have matches on back-to-back days. The week starts with a rescheduled match against Lamar on Wednesday at 10 a.m. The Privateers will then host SIU-Edwardsville on Thursday at 2 p.m.
The Privateer women (1-4, 0-1) lost their Southland opener last Saturday against McNeese.
Anastassia Kouchnareva earned a point in singles while two more Privateers (
Laurie Barendse and
Kateryna Kalistratova) pushed their respective opponents to three sets in singles.
In doubles, Barendse and
Ksenia Reznitskaya have been unblemished through three decisions. They added their third win as a pair this season when they scored a 6-1 win at flight two against McNeese on Saturday. They also have doubles wins over Mississippi State and Mississippi Valley State.
The Privateers have played SIU-Edwardsville twice in the last 10 years. Their last meeting was a 6-1 New Orleans win in March 2018. The Privateers also won 4-3 against SIUE in March 2014.
MEN'S PREVIEW
The Privateer men have three scheduled matches on the docket for the week. They will host Tennessee State on Wednesday at 2 p.m. The men then head to City Park to face Tulane on Friday at 1 p.m. The week is scheduled to close on Sunday against Jacksonville State with a time to be announced.
So far, the men's team is 3-3 on the year against a rugged schedule that has included two SEC opponents in LSU and Ole Miss. The Privateers lost their last match on the court against Ole Miss on Feb. 25.
Matthew Armbruster and
Sergi Tintore co-lead the team in singles wins with three each heading into the week. Armbruster has played across flights one, three and four. Tintore has played from flight three through six in singles this year.
Marcel Volz and
Luke Joujan each have two singles victories this season.
The Privateers last played Tulane in 2019. The last time New Orleans beat Tulane on the tennis courts was in 2010 when they notched a 4-3 victory.
