NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans throws group took home a pair of first-place finishes and set three personal bests at the Strawberry Relays in Hammond, La. on Friday afternoon.
Briana Bell's hammer throw of 49.53 meters was over three meters further than second place finisher A'Ja Gore of Southern. Bell's throw was also a 2.8-meter improvement on her previous personal best set at last season's Southland Conference Outdoor Championships in Commerce, Texas.
Friday afternoon marked the second event win of her career at UNO, and the first since she won the 200-meter dash at McNeese's indoor meet in January of 2020.
Jannah Sharpe also placed top-five in the event with a fourth-place finish after a throw of 42.30 meters.
Another personal best came in the women's shot put where
Christina Davis finished in seventh with a throw of 10.75 meters. It was the second week in a row the Mansfield, Texas native set a new personal best in the shot put following a throw of 10.69 meters last weekend at the Joe Walker Invitational. Christina also finished fifth in the women's discus with a throw of 34.35 meters.
Trace Williams took home New Orleans' second event win of the afternoon after a throw of 48.68 meters won the men's javelin over Austin Harper of Southeastern. It was the first event win in eight meets for Trace and the second longest throw of his career.
New Orleans only sent three runners to Hammond.
Aryn Pitre finished her 100-meter dash in 12.40, taking home third place in her heat. Friday's mark was her second fastest 100 meters this season, and a .15 second improvement on last weeks' time at the Joe Walker Invitational.
Alex Soileau finished his 1500-meter race in fifth place with a time of 4:08.69.
Mason Appleton did not finish after pacing Soileau for the majority of the race.
Next up for the Privateers is a trip to Baton Rouge on Saturday April 20 for the LSU Alumni Gold. Coverage information will be made available closer to the start of the competition.
