HOUSTON - The University of New Orleans beach volleyball team is gearing up for the
2024 Southland Conference Beach Volleyball Championship, taking place from April 19th to 21st at Third Coast.
Seeded at No. 5, the action will begin early for the Privateers as they face the No. 4 seed, San Jose State, at 9 a.m. If New Orleans wins, they will play the winner of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi/Nicholls dual at 2 p.m.
In its lone meeting against the Spartans at the SLC Mid-Conference tournament earlier this season, New Orleans secured a 3-2 victory with pairs on courts three through five earning dual points. The match went three sets at court five before freshmen Ola Filip and Stephanie Gonzalez won 21-17, 23-25, 15-13.
New Orleans concluded its most difficult regular season to date with an 11-20 record after facing 25 different opponents, a first for the Privateers, and finishing 2-3 in over half of its losses.
The Privateers recorded their final regular-season win over Louisiana at Monroe at the Battle on the Bayou Tournament in Baton Rouge on April 12th and 13th. Senior Bria Garmon and sophomore Maria Ozaeta went a team-high 3-1 on the weekend from court one, dropping their only match to No. 9 LSU. The duo concluded the season with a team-best 19-12 record.
Senior Serena Baumgart and freshman Anne Marie Hardouin were behind them, recording two wins over ULM and Jacksonville. The court four pair also earned second-team all-Southland honors on Wednesday after boasting a 13-12 record and leading the Privateers through the first four matches of the season unblemished.
San Jose State concluded its season 2-0 with wins over Santa Clara (4-1) and San Francisco (3-2) at home on senior day, April 13th. The Spartans finished the regular season 12-10.
